Semantic and structural aspects of connotations
Abstract
The study of connotation proves to be both relevant and necessary, given the ambiguous nature of the phenomenon and the variety of perspectives from which it has been approached. This paper investigates the nature, structure, and status of connotation within the semantic structure of the word, adopting an integrative perspective. The influence of both linguistic factors, particularly denotative meanings, and extralinguistic factors such as social, historical, and cultural context is highlighted in the formation and functioning of connotations. Connotation is examined through the lens of structural semantics, with arguments presented for both its inclusion and exclusion from the semantic structure of the word. The research employs a critical methodology based on analysis, synthesis, description, and deduction, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of connotation as a phenomenon with a complex internal structure.
