Abstract

University–School partnerships (USPs) have gained prominence as a powerful mechanism for enhancing teacher development across the continuum of initial preparation, induction, and ongoing professional learning. This article examines how collaborative structures between universities and schools can address persistent challenges in teacher education, including fragmentation between coursework and practicum, misalignment between research and practice, and limited opportunities for sustained professional inquiry. Drawing on recent empirical and conceptual research, the article highlights how USPs function as dynamic learning environments that integrate academic knowledge with situated classroom practice. Models such as professional learning communities, third-space collaborations, and research–practice partnerships illustrate how shared governance, co-design of curriculum, and inquiry-based learning foster more coherent and context-responsive teacher development. The analysis also identifies enduring barriers, such as unstable funding, unclear role expectations, and institutional cultural differences, that constrain the sustainability and impact of partnerships. Strategies for strengthening collaboration are discussed, including mentor preparation, institutionalized inquiry cycles, equitable power-sharing, and robust evaluation systems. Implications for policy and practice emphasize the need for structural support, long-term resourcing, and recognition of practitioner expertise to ensure that USPs become integral infrastructures for educational improvement rather than peripheral initiatives. The article concludes that well-designed partnerships can promote reflective, adaptive, and research-informed teaching, offering a promising approach for addressing the complex demands of contemporary schooling.
