Abstract

Abstract: In this study, we carry out an analysis of the combined health warnings of Decree 579/2017, 9th June, which regulates the manufacture, packaging, and marketing of tobacco products in Spain, to identify their effects on two groups of college students (N=108). The research is approached from an interdisciplinary perspective that combines Semiotics and Linguistics applied to discourse analysis. The initial hypotheses are that fear will be the predominant emotion during the viewing of the warnings, and that the images without text will be more confusing and ineffective. To verify this, the combined warnings are projected to group 1, and without text to group 2. For data collection, a survey and a debate activity are used. The results show that fear is not the main emotion perceived by the participants, and the photographs without text lead to more confusion and ineffectiveness in their preventive impact. Keywords: Tobacco culture. Smoking. Prevention campaigns. Combined health warnings. Tobacco labelling. Semiotics of fear.
