Abstract

In the context of Balinese Hindu society, traditional education functions not only as a mechanism for knowledge transmission but also as a means of preserving and reproducing local wisdom embedded in everyday practices. This study examines the values embedded in pasraman, an indigenous Balinese educational system, and analyzes its role in supporting local culture and cultural acculturation-based tourism in Bali amid increasing pressures from global tourism development. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews conducted in customary villages. Data validity was ensured through methodological triangulation. The findings demonstrate that: (1) the application of experiential learning in pasraman effectively facilitates the intergenerational transmission of local wisdom, contributing to the sustainability of cultural tourism in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals; (2) traditional educational institutions function as key cultural safeguards, mitigating the risk of cultural erosion caused by tourism expansion; and (3) pasraman supports cultural acculturation tourism by preparing younger generations to understand and engage with Balinese–Chinese cultural traditions. This study contributes to the discourse on indigenous education and sustainable tourism by highlighting pasraman as a culturally grounded model for human resource development in tourism villages.
