Abstract

Competitive environments have evolved over time into increasingly dynamic contexts. These changes stem from the growing dynamism and complexity of environmental factors, leading to higher levels of uncertainty. The gradual shift from stable and moderately competitive environments toward discontinuous and turbulent ones has intensified competition, causing competitive advantage to move from being sustainable to becoming predominantly transient. These changes require different competencies and capabilities to interact effectively with such contexts. The need to balance innovation and experimentation with efficiency demands new strategic requirements and postures. Firms’ need to either shape or adapt to these new environments call for specific dynamic capabilities and simple rules of action. In scenarios characterized by higher volatility and abrupt, unexpected change, the recent development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the emergence of a prompt-based economy further intensify the erosion of competitive advantage, placing firm performance under conditions of heightened instability.
