Abstract

While online learning resources are growing rapidly, their integration into classroom instruction remains inconsistent and underexplored. Reconsidering the instructional design of online content and pedagogical expectations of teachers is necessary to explore effective approaches for integrating online learning into classrooms. Drawing on the work of the education and outreach department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, this chapter examines the design principles, implementation challenges, and practical implications of integrating online learning in high school classrooms through a flipped classroom approach. We begin by examining the practices in online curriculum development and rethinking instructional design with the consideration of incorporating online learning in classrooms. We then analyze common implementation challenges and explore strategies to support teachers in adopting a flipped classroom approach. Finally, through reflective practice and empirical insights, we offer insights for instructional designers and educators seeking to implement this approach in their practices.
