Abstract

Online discussions are supposed to foster deep thinking and meaningful dialogue. Too often, they devolve into superficial agreement or uncomfortable arguments that moderators struggle to manage productively. Faculty report feeling unprepared to facilitate discussions that develop students' analytical skills, especially when topics generate genuine disagreement. This chapter presents the GUIDE Framework for Creating Engaging and Effective Moderated Discussions, a systematic, evidence-based approach to designing and facilitating online discussions that foster intellectual engagement. GUIDE addresses five critical stages: (1) Gather moderators and design discussions, (2) Upskill through targeted training, (3) Invite collaborative norm-setting, (4) Deliver proactive engagement strategies, and (5) Evaluate and improve. Drawing on a systematic literature review and current research on discussion moderation, the framework addresses gaps in existing approaches that fail to prepare moderators for contemporary online learning environments adequately. Rather than avoiding controversy or enforcing superficial politeness, GUIDE helps moderators channel disagreement toward deeper analytical thinking. The framework includes practical strategies for selecting and training moderators, establishing productive learning environments through collaborative norm-setting, implementing facilitation techniques that promote rigorous dialogue, and evaluating effectiveness based on learning outcomes rather than satisfaction metrics. Throughout the chapter, a running scenario demonstrates how one instructor applies GUIDE principles in an educational technology course for preservice teachers. This practical application illustrates how the framework translates to real teaching contexts, enabling readers to envision its implementation in their own courses. The framework is designed for use across various educational contexts, including K-12, higher education, and professional learning environments, wherever meaningful online discussion is a learning goal.
