Abstract

This chapter presents a research-based, practice-oriented framework for designing engaging, student-centered online learning experiences. Drawing on foundational learning theories and established learning design models, it emphasizes intentional planning, alignment with learning outcomes, and thoughtful decision-making grounded in learner needs and pedagogical goals. The chapter introduces four essential components—intentional design, collaborative development, media-enhanced learning, and sustainable iterative improvement—that serve as flexible, interrelated elements to guide effective course design. It also explores how collaboration among faculty, designers, and media specialists fosters creativity, alignment, and a shared vision. Practical examples highlight how multimedia and emerging tools, including generative AI, can support active learning, interaction, and accessibility. Finally, the chapter offers strategies for ongoing evaluation and improvement, helping ensure that online courses remain relevant, responsive, and impactful across a range of online educational contexts.
