Abstract

The family Heteromyidae is represented in Honduras by two species, Desmarest’s spiny pocket mouse (Heteromys desmarestianus) and Salvin’s spiny pocket mouse (Heteromys salvini). In this study we provide updated data on the genus distribution, including seven localities for H. desmarestianus, and four for H. salvini. Among these, four protected areas are highlighted, along with the first report of H. desmarestianus in the Intibucá Department; additionally, we confirmed the species in La Paz Department after 82 years. A new elevational record is reported for H. desmarestianus within its regional distribution, and H. salvini is documented at a new elevation for Honduras. In this study, we provide data on the burrows, diet, reproduction, and tail autotomy behavior of the genus Heteromys. Our work exemplifies how rodents are an underrepresented mammal group in the management plans and species checklists of protected areas in Honduras.
