The Role of Development Communication in Promoting Economic Development: A Secondary Data Analysis of Nigeria's Growth and Policy Communication Strategies
Abstract
This research examines the crucial intersection between development communication and economic policy implementation in Nigeria, with emphasis on the agricultural sector's contribution to national development. Employing a comprehensive analysis of secondary data from government publications, academic research, and international organization reports spanning 2010-2024, this study investigates how communication strategies mediate the effectiveness of economic development initiatives. The theoretical framework integrates development communication theory with political economy analysis to critically evaluate how policy messaging, stakeholder engagement, and information dissemination approaches either facilitate or hinder economic participation and growth outcomes. Findings reveal that despite substantial investments in agricultural reform programs, persistent communication deficits — including top-down messaging approaches, limited contextualization for rural populations, and inadequate feedback mechanisms — substantially diminish policy efficacy. The analysis further demonstrates that inconsistent policy communication parallels cyclical productivity patterns in Nigeria's agricultural sector, with periods of effective stakeholder engagement correlating with improved economic indicators. This research proposes a reinforced communication model that prioritizes participatory approaches, culturally resonant messaging, and integrated digital and traditional media platforms to bridge existing gaps between policy intent and community-level implementation. By situating development communication as a critical enabler rather than supplementary component of economic planning, this study contributes to scholarly conversations on sustainable development in Nigeria while offering practical strategies for enhancing the impact of economic policy communication
