Abstract

This study examines firms’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration in relation to green finance and renewable energy production lines under financial resilience and adaptation to a changing business environment. The study employs a Bayesian model and panel data from 2006 to 2022, covering 734 Chinese firms. First, the results show that a firm’s financial resilience does not often lead to increased integration of ESG, but rather the drive for adaptation. This evidence suggests that the pursuit of adaptation to a changing business environment plays a more significant role in driving ESG integration than financial resilience. Second, consistent with the resource-based theory, the findings indicate that green finance and renewable energy production lines enhance ESG performance, but the focus is more on environmental concerns. Third, the estimates suggest that if all the firms were to participate in green finance, it would improve performance by 25.3% for overall ESG, 51.5% for environmental, 32% for social, and 14.4% for governance. Fourth, analysis also shows that if all the firms were to engage in renewable energy production lines, performance would improve by 12.1% for overall ESG, 29.3% for environmental, 12.2% for social, and 6.66% for governance. This study also observes that liquidity constraints and managerial discretion in resource allocation may have become a significant influence on firms' decisions to incorporate ESG considerations. Therefore, this study concludes that China’s ESG integration would improve more by continuously encouraging firms to embrace green finance and renewable energy production lines.
