Possibility of using EU ETS 1 data for emissions inventory in the steel industry
Abstract
This introductory study explores the comparability between national statistical data (ČSÚ) and EU ETS 1 operational data in the Czech steel sector representing a key category in the National greenhouse gas inventory. Due to the sector’s concentration in a small number of large establishments, a high level of consistency between the two data sources would be expected. However, persistent discrepancies suggest the need for closer examination. The study identifies main sources of divergence and considers how EU ETS 1 data could be methodologically integrated into national reporting. It also discusses the importance of transitioning to higher-tier IPCC methods to improve accuracy. For context, emission estimation approaches in two neighbouring countries are briefly outlined.
