THERMOPLASTIC VULCANISATES BASED ON NITRILE BUTADIENE RUBBER AND POLYVINYLIDENE FLUORIDE
Abstract
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are a special class of polymeric materials combining the elasticity of rubbers and the processability of thermoplastics. Particular attention is paid to elastomer/thermoplastic composites obtained by dynamic vulcanization (TPV). The aim of this research is to obtain dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers based on butadiene-nitrile rubber (BNKS-40AMN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), containing sulfur and sulfenamide C as a vulcanizing group, as well as to investigate the influence of the vulcanizing group dosage on the structure and properties of the obtained materials. The effect of sulfur concentration on the microstructure of obtained materials was studied using IR Fourier spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the sulfur content significantly alters the structure of the obtained materials: in the absence of sulfur, a blended TPE is obtained; at a dosage of 0.25 phr - a combination of blended TPE and TPV; at dosages of 0.5 and 0.75 phr sulfur - TPV; at dosages greater than 0.75 phr scorch is observed. Moreover, the degree of crystallinity and melting point of PVDF do not undergo significant changes during dynamic vulcanization, as confirmed by DSC data. The change in the vulcanizing group dosage is affected on the performance properties of the obtained materials: with an increase in the sulfur content, a significant increase in physical and mechanical properties, resistance to thermal aging, resistance to oil, petroleum, gasoline is noted. Also, the changes in the main performance properties of the obtained materials were assessed after a single reprocessing. TPV obtained with a sulfur content of 0.75 phr demonstrates high performance characteristics, including resistance to elevated temperatures and aggressive environments, which makes it a promising material for use in the automotive industry, oil and petroleum sector and mechanical engineering as an alternative to traditional rubbers based on butadiene-nitrile rubbers.
