Why oversimplified wastewater composition undermines experimental integrity and biases membrane fouling interpretation
Abstract
This study reveals that oversimplified synthetic wastewater formulations—such as those using urine as a proxy—significantly distort fouling mechanisms and economic assessments in bipolar membrane electrodialysis for resource recovery. By highlighting a critical yet underrecognized flaw in lab-scale environmental technology research, the work underscores the need for precise identification of key wastewater constituents and experimental designs that explicitly address multi-component interactions. Such rigor is essential to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial implementation, ensuring technologies are both mechanistically sound and economically viable for real-world resource recovery applications.
