Global Mapping of City-Level Economic Growth Decoupling from Fossil Fuels
Abstract
This dataset provides the data required for the global urban-scale typology of cities based on space-observed changes in tropospheric NO₂ pollution and economic growth over the 2019 - 2024 period. It primarily provides globally consistent, satellite-derived Tropospheric Vertical Column Density (TVCD) of NO₂ [µmol m-2] from the TROPOMI instrument aboard the Sentinel-5P satellite, covering the period from 2018 to 2025. The dataset includes information for 5,435 urban areas (population > 100,000) worldwide, along with the meteorological parameters. extracted wind speed, wind direction, air temperature at 2 m height, dewpoint temperature at 2 m height (converted to relative humidity), surface pressure, planetary boundary layer height, and downward solar radiation at the surface. All data were extracted as area-weighted mean values for each urban polygon.NO₂ TVCD and GDP Change Factors for each of the 5,435 cities (population > 100,000) ("NO2TVCDvsGDPurban.csv"), along with the original area-averaged NO₂ TVCD [µmol m-2] and meteorological data extracted at the location of each city from May 1, 2018, to May 5, 2025 ("tropomi_era5_time_series_master.csv") are provided. City codes, their names, and additional information about the cities are also available. See the variable definition in "Variables.pdf" file.
