PULSE: Dataset for Studying Deformation in 3D Patient-Specific Pulmonary Artery Anatomies
Abstract
The right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and pulmonary artery (PA) play critical roles in the cardiovascular function of patients with congenital heart disease, yet biomechanical analysis of these structures remains limited by the lack of publicly available datasets. Finite element (FE) modeling has become a computational tool for studying tissue deformation in these anatomies, but the process of building personalized models is technically demanding and time-consuming.To address this gap, we present PULmonary artery Strain Evaluation (PULSE), a curated dataset of FE simulation results capturing circumferential deformation through nodal displacement in the RVOT and PA across a range of physiological conditions. Derived from 60 patient-specific 3D anatomies reconstructed from cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, the dataset includes 960 FE models: 60 baseline (undeformed) and 900 deformed configurations generated under varying internal pressures and tissue stiffness parameters. It supports applications in medical device design, simulation-based education, and the development of data-driven models for predicting vascular behavior. Open-source tools for dataset reproduction are provided to facilitate reproducible and extensible research.Data base consists of a main folder containing 2 folders and 6 files. DEFORMED_VTK_SHAPES contains VTK files of deformed shapes of each RVOT patient; NOT_DEFORMED_VTK_SHAPES contains VTK files of not deformed shapes (note that this folder has only 60 VTK files of not deformed shapes because it is not required to create 900 not deformed due to repeating files); two .txt files described previously; one .xlsx file that contains the demographic characteristics of each patient.
