De-novo assembly of 82 bacterial genomes using Nanopore sequencing and prediction of biosynthetic capacity (manuscript files)
Abstract
We present the genomic analysis of 82 bacterial isolates, taxonomically identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The bulk of analyzed isolates belong to the actinobacterial class of Actinomycetes, known for their remarkable ability to generate secondary metabolites (including antimicrobials) with diverse chemistries. Whole genome sequencing was performed using the Oxford Nanopore technology, followed by de novo assembly and gene annotation. Genome mining with antiSMASH predicted biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) across different phyla, confirming isolates in the Streptomyces genus as preeminent producers of antimicrobials. Utilization of the current dataset holds potential for the elucidation of the bacterial biosynthetic machinery, as well as for the phylogenetic comparison and biotechnological exploitation of those particular isolates.
