Drug trafficking, violence, and corruption in Central America: development dynamics and current trends.
Abstract
Drug trafficking, in tandem with corruption, organized crime, and illegal arms trafficking, despite a downward trend, continues to remain an important factor of violence in Central America — the most peaceful yet at the same time one of the most dangerous subregions in the world. Given the significance and relevance of the security problem for Central America, the author aims to show the evolution and dynamics of drug trafficking, identify trends in the development of organized crime, analyze the levels of violence and corruption (considering the intensified fight against gangs in El Salvador and Honduras and the anti-corruption campaign in Guatemala), as well as assess the methods of combating crime and corruption in the countries of the “Northern Triangle” at the current stage and propose solutions to these problems for the near and medium-term future.
