STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE COLLATZ DYNAMICAL SYSTEM: MODULAR ALGEBRA, COHOMOLOGICAL OBSTRUCTIONS, AND CATEGORICAL DUALITY
Abstract
We present a comprehensive structural analysis of the Collatz iteration that reveals hidden mathematical patterns across multiple domains. Building on the modular representation T(n) = n(n+1) (mod 2n+1), we uncover algebraic, dynamical, geometric, cohomological, and categorical structures that unify previously disparate approaches. The key results are: • Algebraic factorization: The identity 4T(n) + 1 = (2n+1)Q_n with Q_n ∈ {1,3} shows the 3n+1 step is multiplication by 3 modulo 2n+1, eliminating the piecewise definition. • Dynamical conjugacy: The map C = ϕ∘T∘ϕ^{-1} with ϕ(n) = 2n+1 establishes an isomorphism between integer and odd-integer dynamics, revealing self-similar scaling. • Cohomological obstruction: The parity function Q_n is not a coboundary: there exists no function f : ℕ⁺ → ℚ^× such that Q_n = f(T(n))/f(n). This gives a nontrivial class [Q_n] ∈ H¹((ℕ⁺, T), ℚ^×) in the group cohomology of the dynamical system, explaining the absence of conserved quantities. • Renormalization semigroup: The operator ℛ(f) = ϕ∘f∘ϕ^{-1} generates branching hierarchies modulo powers of 2, providing a multi-scale framework for orbit analysis. • Categorical duality: Functors and natural isomorphisms formalize the conjugacy between T and C, placing the system in a category-theoretic framework. • Geometric interpretation: Points (n, n+1) lie on families of rectangular hyperbolas, with contraction in the Poincaré metric suggesting convergence mechanisms. • 2-adic ergodic theory: The extension to ℤ₂ preserves Haar measure and is ergodic, situating integer orbits in a complete probabilistic setting. • Spectral approach: Preliminary analysis via Hecke and transfer operators indicates potential analytic pathways through operator theory. These structures collectively transform the Collatz iteration from an isolated arithmetic puzzle into an object with rich mathematical connections, offering new invariants, symmetries, and frameworks for future investigation.
