Abstract

Figure 2. Scanning electron microscopy images of S. aureus biofilm-associated attachment to stainless steel K-wires. Bacterial attachment on K-wires (diameter = 0.8 mm; length = 4-6 mm) was visualized at 1134 X (A) and 15 000 X (B). Attachment was established at 37°C for 24 hours by incubating K-wires in 500 µL S. aureus (106 CFU/mL) in TSB + 0.5% (w/v) glucose at 150 rpm. K-wires were fixed overnight in 2% (v/v) glutaraldehyde at 4°C and dehydrated through a series of ethanol washes. K-wires were sputter coated with gold-palladium and imaged in a FEI Talos F200X S/TEM at 10 kV. Scale bars represent 40 µm (A) and 2 µm (B), respectively.
