A Silent Rice Breeding Revolution: Cost-Efficient Field-Optimized Speed Breeding Scales Across the Global South
Abstract
Among the components of the breeder’s equation, breeding cycle time (L) is the most intuitive, least costly to manipulate, and most powerful lever for accelerating genetic gain, particularly through speed breeding. The large-scale adoption of NARES-friendly, cost-efficient, and field-optimized speed breeding across the Global South, including Rapid Generation Advance (RGA), Field-RGA, and Field Nursery (F-N), has fundamentally transformed rice germplasm development by accelerating line fixation without reliance on capital-intensive infrastructure. Through CGIAR–NARES partnerships, public-sector programs have replaced slow pedigree selection with single-seed descent integrated with field-optimized speed breeding, enabling shorter breeding cycles, higher selection efficiency, expanded population sizes, optimized breeding schemes, reduced costs per recombinant line, and faster product delivery, while routinely managing 300,000–400,000 segregating lines per program. Collectively, these advances establish field-optimized speed breeding as a scalable, financially viable, and system-level engine for sustained genetic gain in rice breeding programs globally.
