The Reciprocal Pairing: A Symmetry-Based Definition of the Product of All Elements in Division Algebras
Abstract
This paper introduces the reciprocal pairing, a structural method for determining the product of all non-zero elements of a division algebra — a product that is not well-defined in classical analysis. The method pairs each element with its reciprocal under the natural involution, which is defined as the inverse of the element. This reduces the problem to computing the product of the fixed points. When applied to the four real normed division algebras, namely the real numbers, complex numbers, quaternions, and octonions, this yields the canonical value −1 in each case. The procedure is purely algebraic, order-independent, and requires no analytic tools.
