Peer Review Critique of Maxwell’s A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field (1865)
Abstract
This article provides a complete mathematical and variational peer review ofMaxwell’s 1865 work A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field, evaluated usingthe uploaded source PDF (hereafter Maxwell1865) :contentReference[oaicite:1]index=1. While historically decisive, the 1865 manuscript is shown to be structurallyinconsistent as a modern field theory: it relies on the hypothesis of a mechanicalether, introduces elastic stresses as the supposed origin of electromagnetic forces, and lacks any Lagrangian, functional, or operator structure. Using the Universal Equation as the benchmark, we demonstrate that the Maxwellian framework is nongenerative, mechanically constructed, and unable to derive either Lorentz invariance, the propagation velocity c, or the electromagnetic tensor F?? from first principles. We provide explicit point-by-point deconstruction of the original text, and establishthe mathematical reasons why Maxwell’s 1865 foundations cannot be considered aphysically valid derivation under modern standards.
