Abstract

Dual-Layer Compressed Air–Water Projectile System for Forest Firefighting in Inaccessible Areas and Nighttime OperationsAbstractLarge-scale forest fires, particularly in remote or difficult-to-access areas, represent one of the most critical environmental challenges of our time. Limitations on nighttime aerial operations, high energy consumption of conventional firefighting methods, and difficulties in reaching active fire fronts in complex terrain significantly reduce overall effectiveness. This work presents a non-explosive dual-layer projectile system, composed of a compressed-air core and an outer layer of compressed water, designed to be launched using high-precision pneumatic cannons. Upon impact, the projectile simultaneously releases pressurized air and water, generating an active dispersion of high-kinetic-energy microdroplets capable of cooling, penetrating, and suppressing active fire zones with high efficiency. The system is specifically intended for nighttime operations, inaccessible environments, and direct targeting of active fire fronts, offering a safe, scalable, and energy-efficient alternative for forest fire suppression.1. IntroductionCurrent forest firefighting methods rely heavily on:aerial assets (airplanes and helicopters),large-volume water or fire-retardant drops, ground crews with limited access. These strategies face critical constraints:limited or nonexistent nighttime operation, high human risk, low precision in rugged terrain, significant water loss due to evaporation before reaching the thermal source. There is therefore an urgent need for new active technologies capable of continuous, precise, and safe operation.2. Description of the Proposed System2.1 Dual-layer projectile designThe projectile consists of:Inner compressed-air core Acts as a pneumatic energy accumulator, released instantaneously upon impact.Outer compressed-water layer Completely surrounds the air core and constitutes the primary extinguishing agent. The system remains sealed until impact, without the use of explosives or chemical reactions.2.2 Impact mechanismUpon reaching the target, the projectile:Releases the compressed air, producing a sudden expansion. The expansion accelerates and fragments the compressed water.Water breaks into high-velocity microdroplets. The combined effect produces:rapid thermal cooling, localized oxygen displacement, deep humidification of vegetation and soil. This mechanism maximizes the extinguishing efficiency per unit of water and reduces evaporative losses.3. Advantages over conventional systems3.1 Nighttime operationThe system does not depend on aerial visibility or onboard human crews, enabling effective firefighting during nighttime hours when atmospheric conditions are often more favorable.3.2 High precisionProjectiles can be directed using thermal guidance or GPS-based targeting, allowing precise engagement of active fire hotspots rather than indiscriminate water release.3.3 Access to difficult terrainEffective in:ravines, steep slopes, tree canopies, areas without ground access.3.4 SafetyThe absence of explosives or reactive chemicals minimizes the risk of secondary ignition and collateral damage.4. Physical principles and efficiencyThe system is based on well-established physical principles:adiabatic expansion of compressed gases, fragmentation of pressurized liquids, increased water–air contact surface, rapid heat transfer. The air–water combination enables smaller water volumes to achieve greater extinguishing performance than passive discharge methods.5. Potential applicationsLarge-scale forest fires.Nighttime suppression of active fire fronts.Preventive protection of high-risk areas.Support for ground firefighting crews.Integration into mobile platforms, vehicles, vessels, or fixed installations.6. Environmental and energy impactReduced fossil fuel consumption.Lower carbon footprint compared to aerial firefighting.Efficient use of water resources. No persistent chemical pollutants.7. ConclusionThe dual-layer compressed air–water projectile system represents an innovative, safe, and scientifically grounded strategy for forest firefighting. Its nighttime operational capability, targeted precision, and water-use efficiency position it as a valuable complementary tool in addressing the growing threat of extreme wildfires driven by climate change. Apoyo a brigadas terrestres.
