Abstract

Manaus has the Tarumã-Açu and Tarumã-Mirim urban basins. These are part of a complex network of basins that form in the region and can influence water quality throughout the Amazon region and, consequently, Brazil. The objective of this study was to comparatively evaluate the water quality in the Tarumã-Açu and Tarumã-Mirim basins. Samples were collected at ten georeferenced points. Dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) proved to be outside what is acceptable. The parameters temperature (p2022 = 0.027.10−5, p2023 = 0.023.10−4, p2024 = 0.00028), turbidity (p2022 = 0.0024, p2023 = 0.14.10−3, p2024 = 0.016), total coliforms (p2022 = 0.013) and chlorides (p2022 = 0.023, p2023 = 0.00034) showed significant differences in their results in the comparison between the basins. The basins are suffering from a contamination process that can be deemed eventual, but which has repercussions in the form of lower water quality in these basins.
