Abstract

These files include two worksheets that support a low-resource, classroom-based simulation focused on the physiology and clinical management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The simulation is designed for use in advanced undergraduate physiology or health science courses and can be implemented in a standard classroom or lecture hall without specialized simulation equipment. The simulation engages students in simulation-based learning (SBL) by guiding them through a progressive clinical case that integrates respiratory physiology concepts with real-world clinical data. Students work in small interprofessional-style groups and are assigned distinct healthcare roles to encourage collaboration, communication, and shared responsibility. Using freely available online resources (e.g., virtual vital sign monitors, heart and lung sound audio, laboratory values, imaging, and arterial blood gas data), students interpret patient data, apply physiological principles, and develop evidence-informed treatment plans. The student-version worksheet provides the structured patient case, guiding questions, and prompts for clinical reasoning. The simulation coordinator (answer key) worksheet includes suggested answers, physiological explanations, and facilitation notes to support instructors during implementation and debriefing. Together, these materials allow instructors to deliver an interactive simulation experience without the need for a simulation lab or proprietary software. These worksheets are intended for educational use and may be adapted for different class sizes, instructional contexts, or related disease states. No human subjects data were collected as part of the development of these materials.
