Abstract

EN (English)Handheld gamma-ray spectrometry (hGRS) is a valuable method in geological research, applicable to correlations between well-logging data and outcrop strata, enhancement of sedimentological interpretations, prospecting for radiogenic ores and geothermal resources, and identification of radiogenic hazards relevant to society. Ongoing technological progress and the increasing availability of portable analytical equipment enable specialized measurements to be carried out in previously inaccessible locations, while significantly reducing both time and financial costs of geological investigations. This paper aims to review and popularize a research method based on a mobile hGRS device equipped with a BGO (bismuth germanium oxide) scintillator. The general concept of the method is presented, together with a discussion of its perspectives and limitations, based on a critical review of the existing literature. The main advantages of hGRS include low operational cost, short data acquisition time, the possibility of direct measurements in natural geological exposures, and a broad range of potential applications. These include identification of specific mineral and rock components, sedimentological interpretations, correlation of outcrops with borehole data and regional stratigraphic frameworks, as well as exploration of deposits containing radioactive elements. The principal limitations of the method are the relatively modest resolution of the acquired data and the difficulty of interpreting results in complex geological settings. Nevertheless, the ability to rapidly acquire field data and to conduct measurements in diverse geological environments makes hGRS a highly attractive tool for modern geological studies, particularly as a complementary method supporting classical sedimentological and stratigraphic approaches. The review is supported by example measurements conducted on Bornholm Island (Baltic Sea), including igneous rocks exposed in several quarries, as well as sedimentary profiles located near the Læså Valley and the Muleby area. These case studies demonstrate the applicability of handheld gamma-ray spectrometry across contrasting lithological and depositional settings.
