Abstract
EN (English)Research on past, present, and future storms and storm-induced marine coastal flooding (MCF) is conducted using a combination of sedimentary archives, historical sources, and instrumental records, including predictions derived from numerical modelling. These three sources of information jointly feed storm and flood models, which can then be tested against sedimentary and geomorphological evidence preserved along the coast or confronted with historical documentation.Sedimentary archives provide the longest temporal perspective and are investigated using sedimentological, geochemical, micropalaeontological, and geophysical methods that allow the identification of storm-induced MCF. However, the sedimentary evidence of past coastal flooding is often limited and discontinuous, even in locations considered highly prone to storm-related marine inundation. Around the Baltic Sea, such sedimentary records are predominantly documented along the southern, retrograding coast.Historical sources offer insight into storms and MCF events within areas inhabited by humans over the last ~800 years. Their temporal range overlaps with both sedimentary archives and instrumental records, while additionally providing a socio-economic context and documenting the direct impacts of extreme events on coastal communities.Instrumental records, covering approximately the last 200 years, benefit from continuity but vary strongly in spatial and temporal resolution. Their major limitation is the changing geographical coverage over time, which restricts direct comparability of observations. Although instrumental data are well suited for numerical modelling and prediction, they lack low-frequency, high-magnitude events that represent true worst-case scenarios.Integrating sedimentary, historical, and instrumental evidence enables a more comprehensive understanding of storm evolution, storm-induced MCF mechanisms, and long-term coastal response. In the context of rising sea level and ongoing climate change—particularly the intensification of westerly circulation and deepening of low-pressure systems—the susceptibility of the southern and eastern Baltic coasts to storm-induced flooding is expected to increase, whereas the prograding northern Baltic coast is unlikely to experience a comparable rise in hazard.
