Renewable Energy Tanker Ships in Open Sea as Supply Nodes and Advanced Technological Development CentersPLEASE READ/ FAVOR LEER TECHNICAL ANNEX Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Storage Portfolio in Open-Sea Renewable Energy Tanker Ships in PDFAbstractThis proposal presents the implementation of renewable energy tanker ships strategically located along intercontinental maritime routes. These floating platforms capture, store, and distribute renewable energy (solar, wind, and wave), potable water, and clean energy carriers, operating as oceanic energy supply nodes. In parallel, the energy tanker ships function as evolving technological centers, receiving materials, modules, and components from passing vessels to continuously improve their energy efficiency and operational performance.1. Scientific backgroundOceans concentrate some of the highest renewable energy densities on Earth:High solar radiation in open-sea environments.Strong and persistent winds compared to onshore locations.Continuous availability of wave energy.Offshore engineering, marine renewable energy generation, and naval replenishment at sea are well-established technologies. The innovation of the proposed system lies in their functional integration, specifically oriented toward the global maritime energy transition.2. System descriptionEach renewable energy tanker ship integrates:Photovoltaic and solar thermal collection surfaces.Marine wind energy systems (preferably vertical-axis turbines).Wave energy harvesting devices.Energy storage systems, including:batteries, compressed air, thermal energy storage, green hydrogen production,low-energy seawater desalination and potable water storage.3. Role as a maritime energy supply nodeThe energy tanker ships enable:Energy supply to intercontinental vessels through secure temporary coupling.Transfer of:electricity, hydrogen, compressed air, thermal energy, potable water.Significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption for long-distance navigation.Increased autonomy and energy security along major shipping routes.4. Role as a floating technological development centerA distinctive feature of the system is its evolutionary capability:Passing vessels can:deliver technological modules, exchange components, supply materials for efficiency upgrades. The energy tanker ship functions as:a continuously updated technological platform,a real-world testing environment,a hub for marine innovation and knowledge transfer. Thus, the system is not static, but self-improving over time.5. Strategic placementEnergy tanker ships are positioned:along high-traffic maritime corridors,in regions with high solar and wind availability,at intermediate distances between continents, outside areas of recurrent extreme storms.Placement is based on existing meteorological, oceanographic, and maritime traffic analyses.6. Environmental and global benefitsDirect reduction of CO₂ emissions from maritime transport.Acceleration of the ocean-based energy transition.Decentralized production of potable water.Creation of energy infrastructure without land occupation.Strengthening of global marine technology innovation networks.7. Feasibility and scalabilityThe system is:technically feasible using existing technologies, modular and scalable, adaptable to different fleet sizes, compatible with hybrid, electric, and hydrogen-powered vessels.Implementation can begin with pilot units and expand progressively.ConclusionRenewable energy tanker ships in open sea represent a new strategic ocean infrastructure, combining clean energy supply, potable water production, and continuous technological development. This integrated approach provides a realistic and scalable solution to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport while transforming the oceans into active contributors to the global energy transition.
