Abstract

Hybrid Lacustrine Propulsion System Using a Hydrodynamic Paddle Wheel for Sustainable Passenger and Cargo TransportAbstractThis work presents an innovative propulsion system for lacustrine transport vessels based on a large-diameter hydrodynamic paddle wheel, rear-mounted as a coupled propulsion unit. The system employs dual-surface paddles with differentiated geometry to optimize hydraulic thrust. It integrates solar energy to power hydraulic pumps during daytime operation and a low-power internal combustion auxiliary engine for nighttime or backup use, forming a hybrid, efficient, and environmentally sustainable solution. The proposal is specifically designed for large lakes and calm inland waters, where energy efficiency, environmental protection, and operational reliability are critical.1. IntroductionLacustrine transport of people and goods remains essential in many regions worldwide. However, conventional propeller-based propulsion systems present several disadvantages, including:significant disturbance of lakebed sediments, increased risk to aquatic fauna, high energy consumption, complex maintenance requirements.Historically, paddle wheel propulsion systems demonstrated high reliability in calm waters. IntroductionThis annex complements the main proposal by presenting, from a physical and basic engineering perspective, the feasibility of a hybrid propulsion system based on a coupled hydraulic wheel, evaluating its thrust capacity, scalability, and applicable vessel size range. The analysis focuses on calm waters (lakes, low-current rivers, navigable canals), where hydrodynamic efficiency, mechanical robustness, and low environmental impact are prioritized over high speed.2. Physical operating principleThe system is based on momentum transfer to water, achieved through:Blades that accelerate a mass of water backwardThrust generation by reaction (Newton’s Third Law)Reduced cavitation and violent turbulence compared to propellersThe thrust force can be approximated by: F \approx \dot{m} \cdot \Delta v Where:is the mass flow rate of water displaced per secondis the velocity change induced in the water3.
