Mechanism of the reversed yield asymmetry in a strong-textured Mg-RE alloy at room temperature
Abstract
Reversed yield asymmetry, i.e. compressive yield strength (YS) higher than tensile YS, was observed in a highly basal-textured Mg-RE alloy when deformed along the extrusion direction. Pyramidal 〈c + a〉 slip is confirmed as the predominant deformation mode in both tension and compression, while dislocation configurations differ significantly in both loads. Basal-oriented sessile dislocations were mainly developed during compression, but not during tension, which contributes to the enhanced hardening response responsible for higher compressive YS.
