Why Foldable Devices and On-Device AI Fail to Address Post-App Interaction Constraints
Abstract
Recent consumer computing innovation has focused on foldable form factors and on-device artificial intelligence as mechanisms to extend the smartphone paradigm. This paper argues that these approaches fail because they do not address the underlying collapse of the application-centric interaction model itself. We show that increasing display area and local inference capability does not increase effective interaction bandwidth, reduce cognitive mediation, or resolve task fragmentation across application boundaries. Instead, such innovations amplify existing structural constraints by preserving explicit user orchestration, visual dominance, and app-bounded execution. By reframing foldables and on-device AI as compatibility ?preserving optimizations rather than architectural change, this paper establishes post-app interaction failure as a systems-level condition independent of hardware capability or algorithmic sophistication
