Abstract

For more than a decade, smartphones have been positioned as the primary endpoint of consumer computing innovation. However, despite continuous increases in processing power, sensor density, and on?device artificial intelligence, user experience and functional capability have plateaued. This paper argues that smartphone-centric computing has reached structural saturation, not due to insufficient hardware, but due to fundamental constraints in interaction bandwidth, user interface density, cognitive load, and human attention. With Moore’s Law no longer delivering meaningful experiential gains, incremental improvements in silicon, displays, and form factors fail to overcome these limits. We analyze the structural ceilings inherent to smartphones and demonstrate why further optimization cannot restore meaningful progress. The paper concludes that smartphones represent a mature, terminal computing form factor rather than a foundation for future adaptive systems.
