Bridging The Gap: The Critical Role of Information Literacy in Reducing Health Disparities in the UK. (An outlook of England and Scotland)
Abstract
The implication of the findings in this paper is that digital literacy, specifically the ability to evaluate sources and navigate digital tools, is a critical mediator between education and health action. Cultural resonance and messenger credibility strongly influence vaccine uptake decisions. These findings highlight that formal qualifications alone do not protect older adults from digital exclusion or misinformation. We therefore propose a refined 7Cs model (Confidence, Collective Responsibility, Calculation, Constraints, Convenience, Communication, Context) for understanding vaccine attitudes in crisis contexts and minority populations. Policy and practice should prioritise community co-design, paid local digital champions, culturally resonant messaging delivered via trusted intermediaries, and maintained non-digital access routes. Research should validate the 7Cs quantitatively and evaluate combined digital-inclusion + community-messenger interventions to reduce information inequality and improve equitable uptake.
