Abstract

This study explores the motivations, anticipated challenges, and resource needs of 119 aspiring medical students in Cebu, Philippines. Using a qualitative survey, it identifies intrinsic drivers—such as altruism, service to underserved communities, and personal fulfillment—as well as extrinsic factors like family influence, job stability, and societal prestige. Students anticipated financial burdens, heavy academic workloads, time management difficulties, mental health struggles, and unsupportive institutional cultures as key barriers. To overcome these, they proposed strategies including financial planning, academic preparation, self-care, social support, and purpose-driven motivation. Medical school choice was guided by affordability, academic quality, geographic accessibility, supportive environments, and alignment with personal calling. Findings highlight the need for comprehensive institutional support to develop resilient, competent, and socially responsive physicians, contributing to a stronger and more equitable healthcare workforce in the region.
