Climate Change Impacts on Soil Systems: Temperature and Moisture Shifts, Effects on Soil Organic Matter, Microbial Processes, Nutrient Dynamics, and Adaptation Strategies
Abstract
AbstractClimate change is fundamentally altering soil systems through rising temperatures, changing precipitation regimes, and increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. These drivers directly influence soil organic matter (SOM) persistence, microbial community structure and activity, and nutrient cycling, with consequences for soil fertility, ecosystem resilience, and climate feedbacks. This narrative review synthesizes current scientific understanding of (1) temperature and moisture controls on soil processes, (2) climate change impacts on SOM dynamics, microbial functioning, and nutrient availability, (3) the role of extreme weather events in shaping soil degradation and resilience, and (4) adaptation strategies for protecting and enhancing soil health under a changing climate. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature indexed in Google Scholar, the review highlights the context-dependence of soil responses, the importance of soil structure and mineral protection in moderating carbon losses, and the central role of management in building climate-resilient soils. The review concludes with implications for climate-smart agriculture, land degradation neutrality, and sustainable soil management. Keywords: climate change, soil temperature, soil moisture, soil organic matter, microbial processes, nutrient cycling, extreme events, soil resilience, adaptation strategies
