The Phenomenon of Mixed Indonesian–English Language on Instagram Social Media
Abstract
This study examines the phenomenon of Indonesian–English code-mixing on Instagram, focusing on posts from the Instagram account @gitasav. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzes 20 data samples taken from Instagram feed captions, stories, and highlights. The study applies Muysken’s (2000) framework to identify types of code-mixing—namely insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization—and Hoffman’s (1991) theory to explore the reasons behind code-mixing.The findings reveal that insertion is the most dominant type of code-mixing, particularly in topics related to skincare, lifestyle, travel, and work. Code-mixing is primarily used to discuss specific topics, express emotions and emphasis, and construct personal identity. The results indicate that code-mixing on Instagram is a deliberate linguistic strategy influenced by communicative goals, audience interaction, and social identity. This study contributes to sociolinguistic research by providing insights into bilingual language practices in Indonesian digital communication, especially within social media contexts.
