Abstract

Thermal Directional Aerostatic Platform for Sustainable Transport of Passengers and Cargo in Arid and Semi-Arid RegionsAbstractThis proposal presents the development of a directional thermal aerostatic platform, based on a hot-air dirigible configuration, designed for the sustainable transport of passengers and light-to-medium cargo, with particular optimization for nighttime operation and arid or semi-arid environments. The system exploits the density difference between heated internal air and cooler ambient air, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to conventional aircraft and avoiding the use of noble or flammable lifting gases such as helium or hydrogen.Physical Basis and Operating PrincipleAerostatic lift is based on Archimedes’ principle applied to gases:Air density decreases as temperature increases.Under typical conditions, the density difference between nocturnal ambient air and heated internal air (≈ 90–100 °C) is on the order of 0.25–0.30 kg/m³.This difference provides sufficient lift for useful payloads with low continuous energy demand. The proposed design relies on renewable hot air generation, using efficient thermal systems and eliminating dependence on externally supplied lifting gases.Proposed Geometric ConfigurationType: Directional thermal dirigibleConfiguration: Dual integrated thermal aerostatic modules (cylindrical–ellipsoidal form)Total length: 45–60 mAverage diameter: 14–18 mTotal hot-air volume: 9,000–15,000 m³This geometry provides:longitudinal stability,a favorable volume-to-surface ratio, structural integration with an elongated lower gondola.Lift Capacity and PayloadEstimated lift (average case):Volume: 12,000 m³Density difference: 0.28 kg/m³Total lift: ≈ 3,360 kgEstimated structural mass:Thermal envelope and lightweight structure: 1,000–1,200 kgThermal generation systems: 300–400 kgPropulsion and control: 250–350 kgEnergy storage and auxiliaries: 200–300 kgTotal structural mass: ≈ 2,000–2,300 kgAvailable payload1,000 to 1,300 kg, with potential to reach ≈1,500 kg through thermal and structural optimization.Propulsion and Control SystemElectric motors with orientable propellers for maneuvering and forward propulsion.Power supplied by:thermal energy, solar energy during daytime, batteries or efficient combustion systems as backup.Active directional control (not free-drifting like traditional balloons).Key Operational AdvantagesOptimal performance during nighttime (higher thermal efficiency).Particularly suitable for desert and warm regions.Low energy consumption per ton-kilometer.No need for runways or complex ground infrastructure.Quiet operation and low carbon footprint.Modular and scalable architecture.Potential ApplicationsSustainable passenger transport in remote regions.Light and medium logistics.Humanitarian aid and emergency response.Scientific transport and environmental monitoring.Low-impact regional aerial mobility.Environmental ImpactThe proposed platform:reduces emissions compared to conventional aircraft, avoids scarce or hazardous lifting gases, leverages natural environmental conditions (temperature gradients, solar radiation),contributes to resilient transport systems in the context of climate change.Development StatusThe concept is based on well-established physical principles and existing materials, enabling progressive development, from scale prototypes to real-world applications, without requiring disruptive technological breakthroughs. Thermal Valve Control SystemThe aerostatic body of the proposed dirigible incorporates lower openings equipped with thermal control valves that remain closed during lift and cruise phases. These valves open exclusively during hot air injection cycles, allowing controlled intake of thermal fluid while preventing unnecessary heat losses during flight. The intermittent operation of the injection system, combined with the automatic closure of the valves, enables the retention of hot air within the aerostatic volume for extended periods, significantly improving the overall energy efficiency of the system. This effect is particularly advantageous during nighttime operations or in desert environments where cooler ambient air enhances thermal buoyancy retention. Ayuda humanitaria y respuesta a emergencias.
