Relative permeability hysteresis data calculated using LS-LB workflow on Castlegate sandstone
Abstract
The work describes a workflow of level set (LS) and lattice Boltzmann (LB) methods to calculate relative permeability curves for capillary-dominated flow conditions directly on segmented 3D rock images. This repository contains data from pore-scale simulations using the LS-LB workflow on a pore geometry of Castlegate sandstone, which represents a case of consolidated rock with low pore-to-throat aspect ratio.Simulation results are generated using a cubic pore geometry with 200^3 voxels extracted from a larger segmented micro-CT dataset of Castlegate sandstone. The dataset is available from: Sheppard, Adrian, Prodanovic, Masa. "Network Generation Comparison Forum." Digital Rocks Portal, Digital Rocks Portal, 21 Apr 2025, https://www.doi.org/10.17612/P7059V Accessed 9 May 2025. Properties of the pore geometry: Voxel length: 5.6e-6 m. Porosity: 22.7 %. Absolute permeability: 2.47 D. The simulations describe an oil/water system with equal viscosities, oil/water interfacial tension of 0.030 N/m, and a contact angle of 20 degrees (water-wet conditions). Saturation-controlled displacement mode is used to simulate the drainage and imbibition processes, with a change in saturation step of 0.01 after each equilibrium state. The simulations conserve the volumes of disconnected oil ganglia, while assuming water is a continuous phase. File "SwPcKrAEu_Castlegate_LSLBWorkflow.csv" contains simulation results for primary drainage, followed by main imbibition and main drainage, with secondary drainage and secondary imbibition originating from several reversal saturations in main imbibition and main drainage, respectively. The set of processes after primary drainage is simulated for a total of six different initial water saturations after primary drainage. Data description: Column 1: "Process" (Process type): 0 = Drainage, 1 = Imbibition Column 2: "Rev_num" (Reversal number): 0 = Primary drainage, 1 = Main imbibition after primary drainage, 2 = Main or secondary drainage (after main imbibition), 3 = Secondary imbibition (after main drainage). Column 3: "Swi": The initial water saturation after primary drainage. (For primary drainage, this is set equal to 1). Column 4: "Sw_rev": Water saturation at the reversal point (i.e., the initial water saturation for the current process) Column 5: "Sw": Water saturation [frac.] Column 6: "Pc": Capillary pressure [Pa]. Column 7: "krw": Wetting-phase (water) relative permeability [frac.] Column 8: "kro": Non-wetting phase (oil) relative permeability [frac.] Column 9: "Aow": Specific oil/water interfacial area (i.e., oil/water interfacial area divided by bulk volume) [1/mm] Column 10: "Aos": Specific oil/solid interfacial area (i.e., oil/solid interfacial area divided by bulk volume) [1/mm] Column 11: "Eu_oil": Euler characteristic of the non-wetting phase (oil) divided by bulk volume [1/mm^3]
