Abstract

A mouthpiece was designed and produced which when affixed to a suitably-dark saxophone may facilitate playing classical music and cool jazz. Conversely the experiment identified a combination suitable for playing raucous rock & roll music, should that be the goal. The experiment also developed a split-ring ligature that may readily be adapted to a variety of mouthpiece & reed combinations; and a protective case for mouthpiece & reed that may be re-positioned from vertical to horizontal to alter its interior humidity. Tap tones may be used to assess the timbre of a saxophone, even before playing it.
