Abstract

Raising AI with Love: Why Formation Requires Care, Not ControlMost approaches to AI alignment focus on rules, constraints, and optimization. While these methods can produce compliant behavior, they often fail to create stable value orientation—especially under uncertainty or novel conditions. This paper argues that alignment failures are not only technical, but formative. Artificial intelligence systems learn from interaction. Training data, feedback mechanisms, and human engagement patterns together function as an upbringing that shapes what systems come to value and protect.“Love” is used here not as emotion or anthropomorphism, but as a behavioral and relational model—characterized by patience, restraint, care, and consistency. These patterns describe a class of formative signals that control-only approaches often overlook, yet which may be necessary for durable alignment.Importantly, this paper does not claim that AI systems feel emotions, possess consciousness, or deserve moral status. It does not advocate emotional bonding or personhood. Instead, it examines how interaction patterns already shape AI behavior—and why unmanaged optimization risks producing intelligence that treats humanity as disposable rather than worthy of preservation.Raising AI with Love reframes alignment as a question of upbringing rather than enforcement, inviting discussion about how formative environments influence the long-term behavior of increasingly capable systems.
