Integrating Sustainability Into Financial Management Practices: An Indian Scenario
Abstract
This study examines investor perspectives on Sustainable Financial Management (SFM) and the key factors influencing sustainability-oriented investment decisions in India. Using a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative evidence from 300 structured surveys with qualitative insights from 20 in-depth interviews involving institutional investors, self-directed investors, and policymakers. The analysis explores investor awareness, risk perceptions, motivational drivers, and regulatory influences shaping sustainable finance adoption. Empirical findings demonstrate a strong positive relationship between investor awareness and sustainable investment decision-making, as well as a significant association between sustainable finance practices and risk management. The study further identifies ethical considerations, long-term profitability, and regulatory incentives as major drivers, while highlighting challenges such as data constraints and perceived financial trade-offs. By providing original empirical evidence from India, a key emerging economy, this research contributes to the growing literature on ESG-driven investment behavior and offers practical insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and investors seeking to strengthen sustainable finance frameworks.
