Three-dimensional depiction of single, double, triple helical structures resulting from the respective sequences of glucose linked alpha 1-4; alpha 1-4 and beta 1-3
Abstract
The figure displays the three-dimensional structures of three polysaccharides, in which the repeating units are Glucose residues linked by different glycosidic linkages. The single helix results from alpha-D-glucose linked by a 1-4 linkage (as for example in amylose). The double helix is made of alpha-D-glucose residues, linked by a 1-4 linkage (as, for example, in amylopectin). The triple-helical structure is found in beta-1,3-linked glucose. In both the double and triple helical structures, the chains are parallel to each other. Please, explore further through the book "Foundations of Polysaccharide Science" by Serge Perez
