Application of the orbital sinus bleeding technique to swine
Abstract
The article presents an adapted orbital sinus bleeding technique for swine, offering a more efficient and cleaner method of blood collection compared to traditional approaches such as vena cava or ear vein sampling. The authors describe the use of a modified micro‑collection tube and a dorsal recumbent restraint method to reliably access the orbital venous sinus. Through more than 800 sampling events, the procedure showed minimal risk of injury and produced high‑quality blood samples with little apparent discomfort to the animals. The study concludes that this technique is a safe, practical alternative for routine swine blood collection and may also be feasible for smaller piglets.
