Architectural Ethics: A Normative Conceptual Proposal for Responsibility at the Level of Epistemic and Institutional Design
Abstract
This preprint introduces Architectural Ethics, a meta-ethical framework that locates responsibility not in individual intention or moral attitude, but in the design of epistemic architectures that determine what can appear as knowledge. Architectural Ethics shifts ethical inquiry from persuasion, recognition, or compliance toward structural accountability. Ethical failure is understood as arising from architectures that cannot perceive what they exclude. The framework proposes principles such as design responsibility, perceptual humility, and the encoding of absence, emphasizing structural redesign over inclusion.Architectural Ethics is a core module of MAMI Theory, but may be cited independently as an ethical framework for epistemic and institutional design.
