Strengthening Collaborative Networks using Communities of Practice to enhance Information Professionals’ Knowledge and Skills: A case study of the National Information Workers Associations of Namibia (NIWAN).
Abstract
AbstractProfessional development remains one of the key critical areas for enhancing competencies and career advancement among information professionals. This study explored how collaborative networks using communities of practices helps to enhance Information Professionals knowledge and skills, a case study of the National Information Association of Namibia (NIWAN). The study adopted the use of qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 12 information professionals comprising of members of the National Information Workers Association of Namibia (NIWAN). Purposive sampling was used to select the respondents for this study. This research underscores the transformative potential of CoP’s in empowering Information Professionals in Namibia enabling them to navigate their careers effectively taking cognizance of their evolving roles. Results showed that majority of respondents affirmed that the NIWAN association has created a supportive environment that encourages learning, collaboration, and knowledge exchange which fosters professional growth, innovation, and adaptation to emerging trends in the field while few of them also indicated that there is a need for the association to initiate more online trainings that are aligned with the emerging trends in the LIS field. Furthermore, the study also revealed that though information is shared timely on various platforms, many information professionals still lack motivation to join the association because they do not see value for their money they pay as membership. The results also reported several challenges ranging from the decline in membership, lack of time to participate in the activities of the association, financial constraints, technological challenges and lack of effective communication with members in the regions. These challenges impede effective operation of the association. The study recommends that there is a need to continue strengthening the initiatives of the established CoPs. Furthermore, there is a need to enhance information sharing sessions, training and coaching/mentorship among informational professionals. This is because these CoPs serve as vital platforms for continuous learning and professional engagement, thereby contributing significantly to one’s career path.
