Abstract

This presentation introduces The Gentle Academic, a research-informed response to contemporary university culture and working conditions. It speaks to growing concerns about intensified workloads, metric-driven performance systems, insecure employment, and the normalisation of overwork and rejection across academic careers. These conditions shape how knowledge is produced, how people relate to one another, and who remains in the academy. The Gentle Academic offers a principled alternative. It does not argue for reduced expectations or diminished scholarly standards. It advances a values-led approach to academic work that places intellectual honesty, care, collaboration, and responsibility at the centre of teaching, research, leadership, and collegial life. The ideas presented draw on empirical research, theory, and lived academic experience across disciplines and career stages. The presentation outlines eleven principles that guide this reimagining of academic culture. These principles address honesty about limits of knowledge, respect for different knowledge bases, resistance to false mastery, generosity toward others and oneself, refusal to legitimise overwork, and commitment to equity, collaboration, and shared scholarly progress. Attention is given to everyday academic practice as well as to the structural role of leadership in shaping culture and redefining success. These slides are provided as a free resource for teaching, discussion, and professional development. They may be used, adapted, and shared across academic settings, provided that the original authors and editors are clearly acknowledged. In offering these materials openly, the intention is to support collective reflection and practical change within universities and related institutions.
