Abstract

How do we truly measure economic well-being? For over a century, economists have relied on income-based metrics—GDP per capita, poverty lines, Gini coefficients—to assess human prosperity. Yet these measurements suffer from a fundamental flaw: they measure one unstable variable (economic output) using another unstable variable (currency). This paper introduces the Time to Basic Necessities Index (TBNI), a novel metric that anchors economic measurement to time—the only universal constant in human existence. Every human being receives exactly 24 hours per day; TBNI measures how many of those hours must be sold for survival.Unlike forward-calculation methods that arbitrarily define "basic needs," TBNI employs back-calculation: measuring what remains for survival after mandatory systemic extractions (taxes, EMIs, education, healthcare, transport). This methodology reveals a startling truth—individuals classified as "rich" by government tax brackets may be time-poor, while those earning less may possess greater time-wealth when dependency ratios are considered. We demonstrate that a person earning ₹1,00,000 with 3 dependents can be 400% poorer than someone earning ₹60,000 with 1 dependent—the exact opposite of what government classification suggests. We present: (1) the mathematical formalization of TBNI with dependency adjustment; (2) the k-coefficient as a measure of systemic extraction intensity; (3) empirical documentation of a "30-second inversion threshold" where economic relationships reverse; and (4) validation across 2,847 cases with 86.5% predictive accuracy. This paper positions TBNI within existing theoretical frameworks, states explicit falsification conditions, and invites peer review.
