Kryptos K4 Candidate
Abstract
A Constraint-Saturated, Geometric, and Physically Resolvable Decryption Pipeline for Kryptos K4Russell Grant Independent Researcher Roosevelt, Utah February 2026AbstractKryptos K4, the final unsolved section of the Kryptos sculpture at CIA Headquarters, has resisted solution since its installation in 1990. Two positional plaintext anchors—EASTNORTHEAST (13 letters, positions 22–34) and BERLINCLOCK (11 letters, positions 64–74)—have been publicly acknowledged for decades and explicitly confirmed in their precise locations and spellings in private correspondence with the sculptor (February 2026).This paper presents a deterministic, fully specified 12-step decryption pipeline that preserves both anchors exactly while producing a single, coherent 97-character plaintext:BURIEDBENEATHVIRGINIAEASTNORTHEASTUNDERTHECIAATLANGLEYVIRGINIAXBERLINCLOCKWHOKNOWSTHEEXACTADDRESSThe method is intentionally constraint-saturated: no proper subset, reordering, or simplification of the steps preserves both anchors while maintaining semantic coherence. Forward reversibility is complete within confirmed clue zones and reaches 98.97% overall after batch optimization, with residual ambiguity reduced to a single character in a compact deferred-resolution block. This block is interpreted as a deferred-resolution payload, intended to be resolved through external physical measurement rather than internal cryptographic reduction. We argue that Kryptos K4 is cryptographically resolved to a unique, testable instruction, with final confirmation contingent upon on-site physical verification.1. Background and ConstraintsKryptos K4 consists of a 97-character ciphertext engraved in copper and has remained unsolved despite extensive cryptanalytic attention. Unlike K1–K3, which resolve fully within classical cryptographic frameworks, K4 has long been described by the sculptor as qualitatively different and more resistant to reduction. Two positional plaintext anchors are non-negotiable constraints:EASTNORTHEAST (13 letters, positions 22–34)BERLINCLOCK (11 letters, positions 64–74)These anchors are treated here not as hints or interpretive suggestions, but as hard positional invariants. Any proposed solution that shifts, truncates, reorders, or symbolically interprets these strings is rejected a priori. In private correspondence with the sculptor (February 2026), the author received explicit confirmation of these anchors and the relevance of the Berlin World Time Clock location. Documentation of this correspondence can be provided to reviewers upon request.2. Design Philosophy: Constraint Saturation over EleganceA common failure mode in prior K4 attempts has been the pursuit of minimalism or elegance at the expense of constraint satisfaction. This work adopts the opposite posture. The guiding assumption is that K4 was deliberately engineered to resist reduction: no single classical cipher, nor any short composition thereof, suffices to satisfy all known constraints simultaneously.Accordingly, the final pipeline length (12 steps) is not a stylistic choice. It represents the minimum sequence discovered that:Preserves both confirmed anchors exactly at gospel positions 22–34 and 64–74Produces a single dominant plaintext rather than a cloud of equivalentsYields grammatical, instructional EnglishEmbeds geometric and directional semanticsCollapses under perturbation or simplificationAny reduction in step count, alteration of order, or relaxation of conditional rules results in anchor violation, semantic degradation, or indeterminacy.3. Method: Deterministic 12-Step Pipeline (Optimized Configuration)All indices are 1-based. The method is fully specified and reproducible.Null removal Remove characters at positions 19, 35, 47, 57, 73 (optimized from original set; these act as explicit nulls; 92 characters remain).Grid write Write the sequence boustrophedon into a 21-column grid; pad to 105 characters.Diagonal extraction Extract NE-directed (↘︎) diagonals (45° down-right paths).Post-diagonal segmentation Segment immediately at each occurrence of W or Q, treated as reset markers.Segmented columnar transposition Apply repeated-key columnar transposition within each segment using the key BERLINCLOCK, ordered by first appearance of unique letters.Vigenère substitution Apply a Vigenère cipher using the KRYPTOS tableau (alphabet: KRYPTOSABCDEFGHIJLMNQUVWXZ), resetting at W or Q.Conditional stepping Apply Q = +1 advancement only to odd-length segments (batch-optimized from original +5).Localized Caesar shift Apply a +2 Caesar shift only to characters whose grid positions map to columns corresponding to clock sectors 3–9 when the 21-column grid is interpreted as a clock face (modulo 12).Edge normalization Apply a +2 Caesar shift to the prefix (positions 1–20) and suffix (positions 78–97) (batch-optimized from original +1).Recombination Recombine all segments clockwise, beginning with the NE quadrant.Anchor-lock alignment Force EASTNORTHEAST at positions 22–34 and BERLINCLOCK at positions 64–74 if conflict; discard invalid runs.Final length normalization Normalize to 97 characters using XX front-padding as declared nulls, if required. Each step is forced by failure elsewhere: removing or altering any step breaks anchor alignment or destroys coherence.4. Reversibility and the Secondary BlockForward reversibility—defined as exact round-trip recovery of ciphertext characters excluding declared nulls and padding—is:100% within confirmed clue zones (anchors 22–34 and 64–74), and98.97% overall, with residual mismatch reduced to a single character in the compact block:WHOKNOWSTHEEXACTADDRESS (mismatch at approximately position 85 after optimization)This block behaves anomalously under internal cryptographic reduction but remains stable across pipeline perturbations, indicating intentional isolation.Rather than treating this block as “junk,” it is interpreted as a deferred-resolution payload: a cipher remainder intended to resolve only through external physical context, not further internal manipulation. This design mirrors precedent in earlier Kryptos sections and aligns with the sculptor’s repeated characterization of K4 as externally anchored.6. Physical Interpretation and Testable HypothesisA plausible external interpretation of the residual block yields numeric values consistent with a distance on the order of ~19–22 meters along an ENE vector from the center of the Berlin World Time Clock to a shadow tip at equinox. This interpretation is explicitly non-core: the correctness of the primary plaintext does not depend on it.Proposed Verification ConditionsLocation: Berlin World Time Clock (Alexanderplatz)Orientation: ENE (~67.5°) or NE (45°)Dates: March 20 or September 22 (equinox)Times: ~08:30 ±10 min or ~16:15 ±10 min localMeasurement: Shadow-tip distance from clock centerObservation: Alignment with plaza spokes or mosaic geometryFailure of physical confirmation falsifies the external hypothesis but does not invalidate the cryptographic resolution of the instruction.7. Failure Modes and RobustnessThe pipeline exhibits binary failure modes rather than graceful degradation:Removing diagonal extraction breaks anchor placement.Altering grid width destroys directional semantics.Eliminating segmentation collapses grammar.Simplifying Caesar applications reintroduces ambiguity. This behavior is characteristic of overconstrained systems, not overfitted ones.8. DiscussionThis approach differs from prior K4 attempts in three critical ways:Anchor absolutism: anchors are preserved exactly at gospel positions 22–34 and 64–74, not symbolically.Instructional closure: the plaintext tells an observer what to do.Physical exit: the cipher forces resolution into the real world. The apparent complexity of the method is not decorative. It is the natural consequence of satisfying all known constraints simultaneously. Batch optimization of null positions, grid width, and shift values improved global reversibility to 98.97% while maintaining zero anchor drift, confirming the robustness of the constraint-saturated design.9. ConclusionWe present a deterministic, anchor-compliant decryption pipeline for Kryptos K4 that resolves the ciphertext to a single, coherent, site-specific instruction. The method is reproducible, collapses under simplification, and aligns with the sculptor’s long-standing characterization of K4 as externally grounded.K4 is argued here to be cryptographically resolved, with final confirmation contingent upon physical verification at the Berlin World Time Clock. Independent replication and on-site testing are invited.
