Learning Design Architecture of Visual Feedback and Gamified Design in Secondary Mathematics: Effects on Student Learning and Performance
Abstract
This paper reviews how visual feedback and gamified design features affect student learning in secondary mathematics digital tools. Visual feedback includes features like correct/incorrect signals, hints, step-by-step guidance, and progress bars. Gamified features include points, badges, levels, and leaderboards. The study is a systematic review based on 32 studies published between 2018 and 2025. The studies were found using ERIC, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink. The review is guided by Cognitive Load Theory. The findings show that clear visual feedback helps students focus, reduces confusion, and supports problem-solving in mathematics. However, competitive game features can sometimes distract students and increase pressure, especially during difficult tasks. The paper suggests that digital mathematics tools should use calm and supportive feedback designs that help students learn step by step.
